About ORI

ORI — Oxton Research Identifier — is the persistent institutional identifier of Oxton for scholarly publications of participating journals. Each record receives a stable code, such as ORI:10001/2026.0001, and a public page that keeps pointing to the publication, its metadata and its history, even when the article address changes.

What ORI does

Permanent identifiers

Every registered publication receives a unique ORI code that never changes, is never reused and always resolves to its public page.

Open metadata with history

Authors, ORCID iDs, affiliations, abstract, references and funding are open to read and reuse, and every change is kept as a new version.

Transparent corrections

Corrections, withdrawals and retractions are shown publicly with their reasons; records are never deleted, so citations keep working.

Preserved full text

Journals can deposit the PDF in the ORI repository, where it is kept with a checksum and a second copy, checked on a regular schedule.

Mission

To give participating journals a reliable institutional infrastructure to identify, register and preserve scholarly publications, under public rules for persistence, updates and the handling of retractions.

ORI was created by Oxton Education in 2026 for the journals it publishes and for partner journals, and is open to other publishers, universities and research organizations.

Objectives

  1. Assign every registered publication a unique and permanent identifier.
  2. Keep bibliographic metadata accessible, together with the history of its changes.
  3. Resolve each identifier to a public page that links to the original article.
  4. Flag corrections, withdrawals and retractions publicly, without deleting records.
  5. Offer open exports, an API and OAI-PMH so that other systems can reuse the metadata.
  1. 01

    The journal joins

Its publisher is approved and the journal website is connected with a credential.

  2. 02

    An article is published

The journal sends the metadata through the dashboard, the ORI Connector or the API.

  3. 03

    ORI checks and issues

Credential, required metadata, duplicates and the article page are verified before the identifier is issued.

  4. 04

    The record goes public

A permanent page with citation, exports, API access and OAI-PMH harvesting.

Principles and governance

Policies →
Persistence
Identifiers are permanent; withdrawn and retracted records stay available with a notice.
Openness
Metadata is open in JSON, BibTeX, RIS and Dublin Core, through the record page, the API and OAI-PMH.
Integrity
Every change is versioned and relevant actions are written to a tamper-evident audit log.
Equal rules
Registration, persistence, update and retraction policies are public and apply to every participant.
Privacy
Only what journals publish is stored about authors; author email addresses are never stored.

The registry is operated by Oxton Education. The ORI team approves the organizations that apply to participate, keeps the policies up to date and is responsible for security, preservation and the continuity of the service. Each organization appoints institutional administrators, who manage its journals and the people who register their articles.
