Policy
Persistence policy
ORI is committed to the permanence of the identifiers it issues and to the preservation of the records they point to.
Updated outubro 16, 2026 ·
Key points
- Every public identifier resolves forever, including after withdrawal or retraction.
- Records and identifiers are never deleted or reused.
- Leaving ORI or ending a plan does not remove records.
- Deposited full texts are kept with checksums and a second copy.
Resolution
- Every public identifier resolves to its metadata page at
https://oriregistry.org/10001/2026.0001(identifiers issued earlier:https://oriregistry.org/ORI-XXXXXXXXXXXX), including after withdrawal or retraction. - Changing the article address or the journal website does not change the identifier: the record is updated and the link keeps working.
- Reserved identifiers that were never published are cancelled; the code stays taken and its address answers that it was cancelled.
Commitments
| Situation | What happens to records |
|---|---|
| The journal changes website or platform | Only the article address changes in the record; the identifier keeps resolving. |
| The journal or organization leaves ORI | Issued identifiers and public records stay public and resolving; no new identifiers are issued. |
| The plan of the organization ends or is suspended | Identification, resolution, preservation and corrections continue; only new issuance depends on a plan. |
| A record is withdrawn or retracted | It stays public with a notice and the reason; its identifier is never reused. |
| A component of the system is retired | Records are not deleted. |
Preservation
- Issued identifiers and public records are never deleted, and every metadata version is kept in the record history.
- Full texts deposited in ORI are kept in private storage with a SHA-256 checksum and a second copy; their integrity is checked on a regular schedule and damaged files are repaired from the copy.
- Every record can be packaged in BagIt (RFC 8493) with its metadata, history and files, and all public metadata can be harvested through OAI-PMH.
- The registry is backed up regularly, and the integrity of the audit log is verified continuously (see System status).
Maintenance
- Journals keep their records up to date; the ORI team monitors the consistency of the registry and the journal pages (link monitoring).
- When a journal page stops responding, the ORI record page remains available, with the deposited full text when there is one.
Identifier guarantees
- The code carries no information that could change (title, journal or year), so it never needs to change.
- A check character detects typing errors; look-ups accept lower case, spaces and hyphens.
- Each identifier points to exactly one record, and each record has exactly one identifier.
