Policy

Retractions and corrections

ORI follows the principle that the scholarly record must be corrected transparently, without erasing what was published, in line with good publication practice (COPE).

Updated outubro 12, 2026 ·

Key points

  • The scholarly record is corrected transparently, never erased.
  • Retracted and withdrawn records stay public with the reason.
  • Notices are dated, linked and never deleted.
  • Readers can report concerns; journals assess them.

Statuses

StatusMeaning
PublishedThe record is public and current.
WithdrawnThe journal withdrew the publication; the record stays public with the stated reason.
RetractedThe publication was retracted; the record stays public with a prominent notice and the reason. Retraction is final.

Retraction

When a publication is retracted, its ORI record moves to the retracted status, with the stated reason. The metadata and the identifier are preserved and remain accessible, with a prominent notice on the record page. Retraction is final.

Withdrawal

Publications withdrawn by the journal move to the withdrawn status, with a stated reason. The record remains accessible. Reinstatement is only possible with a recorded justification.

Corrections and notices

  • Errata and retraction notices can be registered as publications in their own right, linked to the affected record through an explicit relation (corrects, retracts, expresses concern about).
  • Expressions of concern and other integrity notices are shown at the top of the record page, dated, and are never deleted; a resolved concern stays visible as history.
  • Readers can report a concern about a record; the journal assesses it confidentially.

Never deleted

  • Records, identifiers and notices are never deleted, so citations keep resolving and readers can see what changed and why.
  • Withdrawn records remain in OAI-PMH as deleted headers for ever, and retracted records stay harvestable with their status, so harvesters learn about the change.

Who decides

  • Withdrawals, retractions and corrections are decisions of the journal that published the article; ORI records them and shows them publicly.
  • The ORI team may add a notice or contact the journal when a record is clearly inconsistent or misleading.
  • Status changes are applied by the registry with the permission of the journal staff and are recorded in the audit log.
